Hi friend, recently, someone from our community asked me for podcasting tips, how to get started and what advice I have based on my experience. I thought this was such a great question that I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you.
First of all, I want to introduce my current podcast, Zenpreneur. It’s my third podcast, but my journey into podcasting started back in 2019 with Wise Minds, which was actually more of a YouTube video podcast series than a podcast. In Wise Minds, I interviewed yoga and wellness professionals in my community, and it gave me my first taste of creating this kind of content.
Wise Minds allowed me to try, experiment, and put myself out there. This was such a great first step for me as it helped me gain experience on technology and interviewing other people.
After that, I started my second podcast, Emprendedores del Yoga, which is in Spanish. That podcast really helped me develop the routine of posting weekly, and I ended up recording over 70 episodes.
Fast forward to 2024, when I rebranded into Yoga Biz Mentor, and as a result, I launched Zenpreneur, a podcast that aligns more with where I am today, and is in English.
With that background in mind, here are some of my best tips if you’re thinking about starting a yoga or wellness podcast.

Before Podcasting: Clarify Your Niche
If you’re new to podcasting and are still working on defining your target audience, I think the first step would be to clarify your niche and understand what problems you will be solving, and then talking about this in your podcast.
On the other hand, it’s perfectly fine to use podcasting as a practice ground. Podcasting can help you improve your communication skills, get comfortable with the technology, interviews (if you choose to have guest speakers), and develop a consistent recording and posting routine.
That said, while you’re gaining experience and confidence, I recommend working in parallel to clarify your niche. A well-defined niche makes a huge difference in how effective your podcast is in reaching your ideal audience. Start by thinking about the challenges or problems your target audience faces—those are the topics you’ll want to focus on.
Once you have more clarity on your niche, make sure your podcast addresses the specific questions and issues that your community is dealing with. By speaking directly to those needs, your podcast will resonate much more deeply, and you’ll naturally start attracting listeners who are aligned with your message.
But don’t worry if you’re not there yet! In the beginning, it’s okay to experiment and see what resonates with your audience. Your podcast can evolve as you refine your message and your understanding of who you’re speaking to.
If you need support finding your niche, my pre-recorded workshop Niche & Shine! will help you.
Managing the Tech Side of Podcasting
Now let’s talk about the technical side. There are a few basic things that you’ll need to know.
Basic Equipment:
You don’t need to make a big investment or become a tech expert to get started. However, there are a few essential pieces of equipment that will enhance the quality of your recordings and give your podcast a bit more of a professional sound.
- Microphone
A good microphone is essential for quality audio. While you can technically start with the built-in mic on your computer or phone, upgrading to a USB or XLR microphone will make a huge difference in sound clarity.
- Headphones
Quality headphones are essential for monitoring your audio while recording and during the editing process. Headphones also help you catch background noise or audio issues early.
- Recording Software
You’ll need software to record and edit your episodes. Programs like Audacity are great. This is what I’ve been using.
- Quiet Recording Space
You don’t need a professional studio, but a quiet space with minimal background noise is crucial. Consider using a simple solution like recording in a small, enclosed area, or even under blankets, to cut down on echo.
Podcasting Platforms:
For Zenpreneur, I use WordPress to post my episodes directly to my website. From there, I use plugins to automatically distribute the podcast to platforms like Spotify and Apple Podcasts. It’s pretty simple once you have the right tools in place, and you can easily manage everything from one platform.
There are other great hosting platforms you can explore, such as:
Anchor (Now Spotify for Podcasters): A free platform that helps distribute your podcast across multiple platforms.
Buzzsprout: A user-friendly platform that simplifies distribution and also offers analytics.
Libsyn: One of the original podcast hosting services, offering a lot of customization options for podcasters.
The key is to find a platform that works for you and your level of technical comfort. These platforms make it easy to upload episodes, manage distribution, and track performance.
Consistency is Key
One of the most important aspects of podcasting is consistency. Whether you’re posting once a week, every two weeks, or once a month, make sure you stick to that schedule. Consistency helps build trust with your audience. They’ll come to expect your content at regular basis and will keep them coming back for more.
In my case, with Emprendedores del Yoga, committing to posting weekly for around 73 episodes helped me develop a rhythm. Consistency also helps you stay on track with content creation, even on those days when you might not feel super inspired to record.
Don’t Be Afraid to Evolve
Finally, don’t be afraid to let your podcast evolve over time. Just like I shifted from Wise Minds to Emprendedores del Yoga, and now to Zenpreneur, your podcast can—and probably will—change as your business and audience grow.
The important thing is to start, learn as you go, and remain open to tweaking your content and format as needed. Every episode is an opportunity to get better, to serve your community, and to connect with your audience in a meaningful way.
Other Questions You Might Have
Should You Trademark the Name of Your Podcast?
Another question I’ve been asked is whether or not to register a trademark for your podcast name. In my opinion, when you’re just starting out, it’s probably not necessary to rush into trademarking your podcast name. Here’s why:
If you’re new to podcasting and are still in the early stages of building your brand and audience, it’s usually better to focus on producing quality content and finding your voice. The name of your podcast may even evolve as you get clearer on your niche and the direction you want to take.
However, if your podcast starts gaining significant traction and you’re building a brand around it—perhaps you’re selling products, offering services, or growing a large, dedicated following—then it might be worth considering trademarking the name to protect it legally. At that point, you’re creating something that’s valuable and unique to your business.
In the end, it’s completely up to you. Trademarking gives you legal protection, but it’s also an investment of time and money, so it’s important to weigh whether it’s necessary for your current stage of podcasting.
For most people is just about starting out, I believe it’s more practical to focus on content creation and audience growth first. Once you’re established and your podcast becomes an integral part of your brand, then trademarking could make more sense.
Those are my main tips for anyone thinking about starting a podcast. I hope this helps, whether you’re brand new to podcasting or just looking to refine your approach. If you have more questions or need guidance, feel free to reach out!
